My new article about legendary rock and roll bus driver Hoot Borden will run in Harp magazine in early 2007. Over the last 51 years, Hoot has driven every major artist from Ernest Tubb, Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan to Poison, Patti LaBelle and Metallica. I'll be interviewing Hoot next week. BREAKING NEWS: Penthouse magazine update

September, 2006

I just returned from Finland and Estonia where I attended the Karaoke World Championships on assignment for Penthouse magazine. Man, what a crazy mess! The event itself was very wholesome -- Very Up with People/high school glee club... A dash of American Idol, a smattering of Dick Clark... But the backdrop -- this drunken party ship sailing from Helsinki to Talinn, Estonia -- was a surreal, depraved potpourri of madness and grotesque inebriation. About 1/3 of the people on the ship were karaoke contestants or supporters, but the other 2/3 were Finns - old and young - out to get hammered for the weekend. Great contrast between the groups. Debauchery to the hilt. An angry, churning Baltic Sea and voracious motion sickness. Russian whores EVERYWHERE in Helsinki for the massive EU/Pan-Asian summit. A diet consisting solely of cruel Estonian vodka and reindeer meat. And near constant karaoke for 32 straight hours...

God, it was a beautiful thing.
